47 years ago, when we started to build our cottage here on Georgian Bay, we chose to keep a yearling pine and let it grow.
When we built a bigger deck in 2002, we incorporated the growing tree right into the plan, creating a large hole through the deck. Over the years, it provided us plenty of much needed shade and little resting branches for our wrens and tiny hummingbirds.
Today, the workers came to cut it down, as it had now grown more than 50 feet and was leaning very close to the roofline where it could easily fall in a November storm and badly damage the cottage.
Very sad to see it fall — yet another milestone in our lives.
